Pomme d’ambre is french for apple of amber, i.e. a ball made of perfumes or as we know them now, pomander, a round ball covered in flowers and often attached with ribbon. Pomanders were first mentioned in literature in the mid-thirteenth century and the first uses were to carry a religious keepsake.
